San Diego has a rich military heritage. The original Top Gun fighter pilot school began in 1969 at Miramar Naval Air Station with nine exceptional pilots.
This flight with take you over multiple locations where the Top Gun movies were filmed.
Detailed description of locations
Miramar Air Station – though Top Gun training is no longer conducted at Miramar Air Station this is the location most seen in the original Top Gun.
Fort Rosecrans – A federal military cemetery in Point Loma. This location was seen in Top Gun: Maverick for Iceman’s funeral.
Point Loma Lighthouse – Otherwise known as Viper’s house from the original Top Gun.
North Island Naval Air Station – The largest aerospace-industrial complex in the US Navy. The football scene in Top Gun: Maverick was filmed on this beach, and this is the port of numerous aircraft carriers and Naval Aircraft.
Silver Strand: Home to the US Navy SEALs training
USS Midway – A historical naval aircraft carrier, now museum, housing an extensive collection of military aircraft. The Top Gun: Maverick Global Premier was held on this aircraft carrier; Corporate Helicopters flew Tom Cruise in for his red-carpet appearance.
West Laurel/Union Street – In the neighborhood of Banker’s Hill, the motorcycle/car scene between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in the original Top Gun.
Kansas City BBQ – The iconic Great Balls of Fire piano scene with Goose and Maverick was filmed at this location. Located in the Harbor District of Downtown San Diego.
